Fundamental Values – Chapter 6 and Dr. Love: Paul Zak

Paul Zak - Dr. Love

Paul Zak - Dr. Love

I strongly encourage you to read Chapter 6: Fundamental Values, found in Thinking Points: A Progressive Handbook AFTER you watch the following TED Talk by Dr. Paul Zak.

Dr. Zak was the first to discover that oxytocin, an ancient chemical released in our brains under certain circumstances, is responsible for us to determine who to trust. There are certain regular and, ideally, daily social circumstances that help release oxytocin and involves physical contact.

Dr. Zak demonstrated the behavior at the end of his TED Talk (watch for it), by hugging a total stranger. He recommends 8 hugs per day to get the daily recommended dosage of oxytocin to increase our empathy surplus and our capacity to trust human collaboration. Continue reading

Kudos to SPANOH and Kurt Bateman, Columbus, OH

Kurt Bateman

Kurt Bateman

Greetings, Kurt,

You and I serve together on the state council of SPANOHIO. I was very excited to hear at our last council meeting you will be posting photos to our Healthcare Is A Human Right Collaboration photo petition group. I look forward to your first upload.

I am also very excited you are considering filing a petition to place your name on the 2012 primary ballot for the position of party representative from your precinct / ward. The deadline for that filing in Ohio is 12/07/11. You should consider checking that date. I have not confirmed it since the state drew new lines for our political districts. You should also double check to see if your county party elects party precinct representatives every two years or every four years. If it’s every four, that aspiration will have to wait till 2014. However, you could place your name on the 2012 primary ballot for the position of state party representative from your state senate district. Continue reading

A Framing Memo for Occupy Wall Street – George Lakoff

by George Lakoff, with permission and encouragement

George LakoffI was asked weeks ago by some in the Occupy Wall Street movement to make suggestions for how to frame the movement. I have hesitated so far, because I think the movement should be framing itself. It’s a general principle: Unless you frame yourself, others will frame you — the media, your enemies, your competitors, your well-meaning friends. I have so far hesitated to offer suggestions. But the movement appears to maturing and entering a critical time when small framing errors could have large negative consequences. So I thought it might be helpful to accept the invitation and start a discussion of how the movement might think about framing itself. Continue reading

Frames and Brains – Comments on Chapter 3 – The Way Forward

by Chuck Watts, Co-Founder, a week late

When you get up in the morning look in the mirror, do you see an economic change agent, or a loving son, daughter, husband, wife? As you prepare for the day ahead, are you thinking about protecting and empowering neighbors or selling to neighbors and getting new neighbors to sell to? How we identify ourselves defines our behaviors and interactions in the world.

If caring citizens are to make progress in overcoming cruel corporate meanness and expand human rights, freedom and prosperity, it is important to embrace the latest insights of the brain. Continue reading

Wilmington, OH, City Council Candidates Need Encouragement On Human Rights

by Chuck Watts
Mike Wallace

Mike Wallace, Healthcare Is A Human Right

With the exception of Randy Riley, Mike Wallace, David Raizk, and Linda Gallagher all other city council candidates are reluctant to embrace the Healthcare Is A Human Right Collaboration. I’ve talked to them all, except David Hollingsworth, candidate for auditor. They all received an invitation to join the collaboration and participate in the photo petition. They all saw the Citizenship Day ad in the News Journal, or heard about it.
